· Why should a youth go through confirmation?
· What ages go through the confirmation process at FUMC?
Growing in faith is a vital part of our lives as Christians. The chance to learn about God, the Bible and our faithful responses to the scriptures helps shape who we are and how we live our lives.
As United Methodists, we believe that church is the place for our youth to ask their big, tough questions and to receive the sometimes not-so-easy answers. At FUMC, we strive to make our educational opportunities safe places where our children can grow, develop their faith, voice and struggle with their big questions, and ultimately come to the place in their lives where they claim their faith in the Triune God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
What Is “Confirmation”?
“Confirmation” refers to the decision a person makes to respond to God's grace with intentional commitment, publicly reaffirming his or her baptismal vows before the congregation. (If a person has never been baptized, they would receive baptism at this time.)
Most of our young people were baptized as infants. Others are new to the church and don’t know much about it, God or the Bible. A “Confirmation Class” is the chance for both groups of youth ( 6th – 8th grade) to engage for themselves with the Christian faith that has been passed down to them from family and church. During this class, they learn about the meaning of Christian faith; the history and teachings and The United Methodist Church; and an explanation of the baptismal and membership vows they will be professing.
All this is in preparation for the time when they claim their faith and take their vows at their “Confirmation Service”.
